We are the Woodlawn Riverhawks. Welcome to our school.

Woodlawn Elementary School, located on 5.1 acres of land in North Lawrence, has a long history and can trace its roots back to the earliest settlements in the area. Originally named Fifth Ward School, in 1890, its teachers petitioned to change the name to Woodlawn because the building was surrounded by a wooded lawn of elm, birch, and walnut trees. The original building burned to the ground in 1923, and a new school, also named Woodlawn, was built in 1924. Woodlawn serves students in grades K-5, including offering a full-day kindergarten program.

Did You Know? The United States Department of Education has recognized Woodlawn as a National Blue Ribbon School! In addition, the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force awarded Woodlawn its Challenge Award for inspiring high student achievement among populations with high ethnic and economic diversity.

School Song (2024 Edition)

We are the Woodlawn Riverhawks. Welcome to our school.
We are the Woodlawn Riverhawks, where all the kids are cool.
Woodlawn Riverhawks--we always do our best, because the
Woodlawn Riverhawks soar above the rest.

I count. (I count.) I am important to my school. (I am important to my school.)
I do my best everyday. (I do my best everyday.) I make a difference. (I make a difference.)

We are the Woodlawn Riverhawks. Welcome to our school.
We are the Woodlawn Riverhawks, where all the kids are cool.
Woodlawn Riverhawks--we always do our best, because the
Woodlawn Riverhawks soar above the rest.

Be kind. Be well. Be strong.

Thank you Music Teacher Emily Boedecker for writing our school song and leading us in singing every Friday.

Our Mission

"Promoting a healthy self–image, positive attitude, and essential skills to live, learn and work in international society"

Exploring our past, discovering the future.

Just as the exterior of the building has changed in the past 100 years, so has the learning and instruction inside. That is why the theme of this celebration is not just about honoring the past, but also planning for the future. We appreciate your support at we envision what the next 100 years will look like at Woodlawn Elementary.

Planning Committee

The events, website, and other activities for our 100 year celebration are coordinated by a group of teachers, staff, parents, and community members. Want to get involved? Email Brandon Daley at bdaley@usd497.org.
